Additive Manufacturing (AM) describes the technology that creates 3D objects by adding layers of material. The term AM encompasses many technologies including subsets like 3D Printing, Rapid Prototyping, Direct Digital Manufacturing, layered manufacturing and additive fabrication.

Most AM technologies involve the use of a computer, 3D modeling software, machine equipment, and layering material. Layering materials can include plastic, metal, and concrete. Some of the most current applications include medical and dental implants, automobiles, and airplanes.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS

Michael Cobert  |  Director, NIU EIGERlab

• Mike has over forty years of experience in machine tools, manufacturing, and business incubation.  Over the last sixteen years, Mike has worked at the NIU EIGERlab, a Not-For-Profit Business Incubator/ Product Development Center, where he played a key role in the development of the EIGERlab.  Prior to becoming Director, Mike was responsible for EIGERlab operations and the Center for Product Development including Product Development and 3D Printing.  For over twenty-five years prior to the NIU EIGERlab, Mike was in manufacturing, working his way through the ranks from building sub-assemblies to machines including programing, operating and installing them, Assembly Scheduler, Master Scheduler, Managed worldwide machine installations, Project Management and the Director of Procurement.

Carl K. Dekker  |  President, Met-L-Flo, Inc.

• Carl K. Dekker serves as the President of Met-L-Flo, Inc., a growing Service Center for Additive Manufacturing located in Sugar Grove, IL. He has been actively involved in research and product development using current technologies and innovative methods. Following is a brief recap of his industry experience.  Mr. Dekker has presented his work at various conferences globally.  Mr. Dekker’s work has been published in industry journals including Prototyping Technology, Rapid Prototyping Report, Time Compression Technologies, and the Wohlers Report.  Currently President Elect and Director of the Additive Manufacturing Users Group (AMUG), Past Chair of the ASTM F42 Committee on Standards for Additive Manufacturing and a Past Chairperson of the SME’s Rapid Technologies and Additive Manufacturing (RTAM) Community (formerly the RPA). He also serves as the Chair of the Direct Digital Manufacturing Tech Group of the RTAM. He was honored with the award of merit making him an Honorary Fellow of ASTM Intl. He holds a Master Certificate in Rapid Prototyping and is a proud recipient of the SLA “Dinosaur” award (Currently the Distinguished INOvator – DINO). Just recently he completed his second term as a Judge for the LEAP awards.

Ken Wunderlich  |  Technical Specialist, IMEC

• With more than 22 years of experience in both manufacturing and product design, Ken has acquired a diverse set of skills in various manufacturing arenas. His experience ranges from medical devices, automotive products, food packaging, consumer products, maintaining ISO 9001, AS9100, IATF 16949, ISO 13485, and 21CFR regulations, certifications for medical devices, and more. Ken’s primary skill set lies within process development, improvement, and organization. Through the years, Ken has seen a variety of processes from the perspective of both supplier and customer, which has provided a unique addition to his toolbox – diplomacy. Finding a solution is his ultimate goal.
