We have subcategory pages for our products and you can imagine how long the breadcrumb is if it takes the meta title instead of the category title.

I understand the problem; we’re facing it ourselves, too.
Unfortunately, changing the visual breadcrumb requires reconsidering how we generate the Schema.org breadcrumb titles (there are discrepancies for special queries). So, I forwent implementing a toggle in the first iteration.

I think we already collected enough information from our users to make a second iteration of the breadcrumbs and add the toggle, so I marked it for the next major update; however, I do not have a timeframe for this release yet.
